Tanner Borchardt needs to put on a show for Nebraska Basketball on Sunday.

Let me start off by offering the following disclaimer: I am fully aware that offense is not necessarily the best part of Tanner Borchardt’s game. I am perfectly fine with that. He is a big man who is supposed to rebound the basketball. He certainly did that on Wednesday against Butler, hauling in seven rebounds, which was second on the team. However, that will have to change on Sunday. He not only needs to be able to rebound, but he also needs to show that he can be an effective presence inside the paint.

I get the fact that Nebraska Basketball has a ton of outlets for offense. James Palmer Jr., Glynn Watson Jr., and Isaiah Roby are just some of the names that can put the ball in the basket with regularity. If it is not broken, why fix it? However, if Nebraska Basketball wants to beat TCU on Sunday, they need scoring from Borchardt. In 32 minutes of play on Wednesday,  he tallied six points on three-of-five shooting from the field. The majority of those shots came from inside the paint as expected. Also coming unexpectedly was the tremendous amount of points that the trio mentioned above recorded in the game. It was truly fun to watch.

Nebraska Basketball needs to make sure that they get Borchardt the ball more on Sunday. If nothing else, he can help destabilize the defense. Getting the ball inside should be able to help collapse the defense at times. From there, Nebraska could kick the ball out to an open Palmer or Roby and not allow the TCU defense to get set. That is just one of the ways he could help on Sunday. I would like him to be able to put up more points as it will have to take a full team effort to beat TCU.

Borchardt’s best game of the season came on February 2 against Illinois. In 32 minutes of play, he was efficient from the paint, going six-of-nine on field goal attempts. He proved to be a monster on the glass as well, recording 18 rebounds and 12 points to boot. It was a truly exciting performance in what was otherwise a dismal loss for Nebraska Basketball. That’s the type of play that I would like to see out of him on Sunday. He certainly has that capability, although his track record may speak otherwise.  The Illinois game has been his only contest in which he has scored double figures.

Tanner Borchardt needs to continue to play at a high level. He is the team’s de facto big man and he needs to add another dimension to his game if Nebraska Basketball wants to have success on Sunday. If he can put his entire skill set together, Nebraska Basketball should be able to have a tremendous game against a tough opponent.
