Nebraska Basketball is moving quickly in the process to find a new head coach.

It appears that the search for new Nebraska basketball coach is escalating quickly. Per a report from Chris Basnett of the Lincoln Journal Star , the program and Fred Hoiberg, have made contact. This comes as head coach Tim Miles begins to prepare his team for the NIT tournament. They are set to face Butler on Wednesday.

Hoiberg would be a great choice for the program. He has tons of basketball experience. Many of you may remember him as a player for the Chicago Bulls and Minnesota Timberwolves. He began his career as a player for Indiana Pacers in 1995.  He played his last game in the National Basketball Association in 2005 as a member of Minnesota. He then made the transition to coaching beginning in 2010 where he manned Iowa State’s basketball program. He found tremendous success while he was there, winning the Big 12 tournament two times in 2014 and 2015.

After finishing his collegiate coaching career with a 115-56 record in  six seasons at Iowa State, which included a 49-39 record in conference play, he took his coaching talents to the NBA. He did not have as much success there, spending four seasons with the Chicago Bulls. Although he led them to the playoffs in 2016-17, they lost in the first round. He would finish his coaching career in the NBA with a 115-155 record.

What could he bring to Nebraska basketball? For one, he wouldn’t bring too much turnover as he is a veteran coach much like Miles is. Not only that, he has found success at the collegiate level, something the Nebraska basketball program desperately needs. Nebraska basketball needs to find some way to get back to the NCAA tournament. With so many seniors graduating in 2019, there will be a long road ahead. With the track record of success he has had at the collegiate level,  Hoiberg may be the right guy to be a part of a rebuild of sorts for the program.

There is no doubt that this will be a long haul for Nebraska basketball. You can’t just have players like James Palmer Jr. graduate and expect success the year after. This will be a process of development and rebuilding players. There are some players who could be a part of the rebuild on the roster right now, but for the most part the roster will be depleted following graduation. If he is officially named the head coach, Hoiberg  will have a tough task ahead of him. It’s not a type of task that any coach can handle, and even the most experienced coaches can have trouble with a rebuild.

Hoiberg is destined to be the guy. The fact that these developments have come out over the past 24 hours makes Miles a lame-duck coach at the moment. It will be just one of the many interesting storylines heading into the NIT Tournament on Wednesday.
