For the Nebraska football team, things can get pretty silly during a bye week but they usually don’t get as silly as they have this week.

The extreme silliness surrounding the program is thanks to rumors that have started up claiming Nebraska has interest in rejoining the Big 12 conference. This isn’t the first time those rumors have sparked.

During the offseason and just before fall camps began, Kansas State head coach Bill Snyder claimed he thought the Huskers’ athletic department might be regretting leaving for the Big 10. Snyder made those comments without explaining why he thought the Cornhuskers might have wanted to leave the B1G.

Radio talk show host Tim Montemayor started the rumor mill churning something fierce when he tweeted out that “sources” were telling him the Nebraska football team and the rest of the athletic department would be willing to move because Oklahoma is on the way out.

Those who understand Nebraska football and it’s relationship with Oklahoma understand that the Sooners leaving the conference would make it less likely, not more that the Huskers would join the Big 12, or whatever this new alignment would be called.

Montemayor, likely having it point out to him it would be odd for the Cornhuskers to swallow their pride and go back to the Big 12 just a few years after they left claimed later this would be a brand new conference with a new name.

While there have been plenty of people who tried to explain to those who slowly bought into the rumors that there was very little chance of it happening, the radio host seems to desperately want people to believe he is somehow the soul person these sources have been willing to talk to about this seismic shift in the college football world.

While Nebraska athletic director Shawn Eichhorst did not specifically put the rumors to bed, he did issue a statement which seems to definitely undercut the talk about the Cornhuskers making a move. “Proud & privileged to be member of the Big Ten-the oldest & best power 5 athletic conference. Excellence = academics, athletics & life. GBR!” The tweet said.

Perhaps that will put these ridiculous rumors to bed. Of course, when someone realizes he’s getting attention by forwarding false rumors, it’s possible Montemayor will simply double down.
