The Nebraska basketball program took advantage of the hoopla surrounding Mike Riley’s Friday Night Lights camp in order to woo a class of 2018 recruit.

While most of the talk about Nebrasketball has centered around the massive loss that is Andrew White’s transfer, Tim Miles isn’t about to let a bump in the road derail his future plans. This past weekend, the Huskers’ head coach hosted Trey’von Hopkins for a visit.

During his stay this weekend, Hopkins was treated to everything Nebraska has to offer when it comes to its fan base. More than 3,000 people had amassed to watch the football camp and the basketball recruit took those sites in before getting a full tour of the campus and the facilities Nebraska basketball has to offer.

The Midwest City, Oklahoma combo guard was in on an unofficial visit and while he checked out the PBA and what would be his practice facilities, Miles and staff had him swing by Memorial Stadium in order to see the biggest tourist stop in the state.

“It was all a surprise,” Hopkins told HuskerOnline.com. “I was expecting something, but not that much. It was a crazy environment with the fan love. I went to the Friday Night Lights camp, and that was just a camp and there were so many fans there supporting the recruits. I couldn’t imagine what they do for the actual athletes there.”

Hopkins was actually found when assistant Teddy Owens was scouting the AAU talent in the Oklahoma area. The two forged a good relationship over the last few months but the guard feels he’s also got a special relationship with Tim Miles.

“Even over the phone I could tell that he was a great guy and great coach,” Hopkins said. “When I got up there, that’s the type of coach that I’m looking for when I get to college… He was just telling me how he ran his program, what he’s looking for in an athlete and how he felt about me. He really was asking me about how I felt and what I wanted, too, and I really liked that from a coach.”

At the moment, the Nebraska basketball program is the largest program to give him a scholarship offer. He also holds offers from Boise State and Tulsa, but the guard says he’s getting more attention from the big boys. Hopkins, who averaged 24 points, 4.5 rebounds and two assists per game last year has been getting attention from schools like UCLA, Arkansas, Creighton, Memphis, Oklahoma State, Oklahoma, Georgia and Kansas State among others.

Interestingly, despite the fact that he stands just 6’1″ he played most of the last season as a power forward. It will be interesting to see how he plays as a natural guard. It appears the Nebraska basketball program believes he’s one they need to get in on early on.
