Nebraska Baseball Big Ten’s Hottest Team Heading Into The Tournament

The Nebraska Baseball team might not be the number one seed in the Big Ten tournament, but the argument can be made the Huskers are the team to beat.

The Minnesota Golden Gophers managed to avoid getting swept by the Ohio State Buckeyes, so they were able to hold onto the top seed in the tournament, but it certainly seems like the Cornhuskers are hot on their heels.

The Nebraska baseball team had a quite impressive week, starting off with a 15-2 victory over the Creighton Bluejays. The momentum from that blowout win carried over to their series with the Indiana Hoosiers, and it was this series where the Huskers might have served a bit of notice to the rest of the conference.

Indiana came into the series knowing they needed just one win to hold onto the second seed in the tournament. Not only couldn’t the Hoosiers manage to get that win, but the team also scored just one run in their three games against the Nebraska baseball team. That run came in the ninth inning of the first game of the series and kept them from losing 4-0.

The fact of the matter is the Huskers’ hot streak started before Creighton. Last weekend, the Huskers lost the first game of their series against the Penn State Nittany Lions, but they won the final two games by a collective 14-1 score. Sound familiar? The Nebraska baseball team polished off the Hoosiers by a collective score of 9-1 over the three games.

Not even Minnesota, who came into the final weekend of the Big Ten’s regular season, ranked 24th in the nation has been as hot as the Huskers. The Nebraska baseball team has managed to put together a five game winning streak where the offense has done just enough to beat all comers while the pitching staff has been stellar. Made up of two freshmen and one junior, the rotation has gotten a thousand times better as the season has gone along.

During this six-game win streak, Darin Erstad’s team has posted a team ERA of just 0.67 and posted three shutouts. While there’s little chance the pitching staff can continue that pace, it’s been looking like one of the best in the conference for a while now.
