Scott Schreiber Is On a Hot Streak For The Record Books For Nebraska Baseball

Scott Schreiber is turning into one of those players that people just expect to make something special happen whenever he strides to the plate, right now the sophomore first baseman is rewarding those expectations.

On Thursday night, Schreiber broke a 0-0 tie in the sixth inning of his Nebraska Cornhuskers’ contest against the Indiana Hoosiers with a three-run blast. That home run was not only the game winner but further cemented Schreiber as the hero of a Nebraska baseball team that has a Big Ten title on its mind.

Just how dominant has Schrieber been against Husker opponents these days? Keep in mind that not only did he hit the go-ahead home run but later in the game he hit a triple (his second of the season) and was driven home a batter later by an RBI groundout. In other words, Schreiber played a part in every run the Huskers scored in the team’s 4-1 win on Thursday night.

In Tuesday’s game, against the Creighton Bluejays Schreiber went 5 for 6 while driving in five runs and scoring three. In the game before that, against the Penn State Nittany Lions the first baseman went 4 for 4 while bashing two home runs and driving in three. All of this shows that while Schreiber had been the Huskers’ best power hitter all season long, he’s taken his game to the next level over the last week.

So what level is Scott playing at now? The Nebraska baseball program hasn’t seen this kind of power for over a decade. While his 16 homers this season doesn’t yet have him on the list of top 10 when it comes to home runs in a season, he’s getting close. It’s almost a certainty he won’t be setting the team record this year; Dan Johnson holds that mark with 25. The way he’s going right now could see him get in on the bottom of the rankings, and that would put him in pretty impressive company.

19 or 20 home runs by the end of the season may not be probable but seems realistic the way the first baseman is hitting. If he does get to 20, he’ll pass Alex Gordon and his current head coach, Darin Erstad. That’s pretty impressive company considering the last time the Cornhuskers saw home run production like that was in 2005.

11 years ago, Gordon bashed 19 home runs, and the Huskers were near the top of the college baseball world. Since that time the program has had problems finding consistent success. Is it possible Schreiber, aided by an offense in general that has been better than what we’ve seen in the last few year could make a run? The team has won four in a row and has looked pretty darn good in those four wins. In his last three, Schreiber has gone 11 for 14 with five homers, one double, one triple and 11 RBI while scoring seven runs.

His hot streak might come to an end eventually, but the Nebraska baseball team is doing an excellent job of capitalizing on it while it lasts. The excellent news about this sudden surge is even if Nebraska struggles once they get to the tournament, or regionals is Scott Schrieber is only a sophomore, and it suddenly appears the sky is the limit.
