The Nebraska Cornhuskers haven’t been the healthiest team this season, and the trend will continue in their third Big Ten game. With the Huskers looking for their first win in conference play, some much-needed talent will be on the sidelines against the Minnesota Golden Gophers.

According to Nebraska.247sports.com, defensive back Daniel Davie is likely to miss his third straight game. However, Mike Riley said the Cornhuskers will reevaluate Davie on Friday. Without Davie, the Huskers defense has played extremely well through most of two conference games, but they’ve been unable to seal the deal in the final drive.

Unfortunately, the Huskers will also be without defensive tackle Kevin Williams and linebacker Michael Rose-Ivey. It was a long shot for any of these guys to take the field, but the Huskers were holding out hope.

While Rose-Ivey won’t be available, the Huskers will have linebacker Josh Banderas back in the middle. However, they won’t have his replacement Chris Weber in the lineup. During Banderas’ time off due to a groin injury, Weber dominated in the run game. He leads the Huskers with 42 tackles. Imagine if the Huskers could have their whole group of linebackers healthy at the same time.

Another linebacker Luke Gifford is questionable for Saturday’s game. He’s dealing with a hip injury. If Gifford is able to perform, he’ll be the back up to Marcus Newby.

More from Husker Corner

Last week, Vincent Valentine had his best game of the season. He was coming off of a severe ankle injury. Despite a slight setback, Valentine should be ready for kickoff. Along with Maliek Collins, the Huskers have a formidable duo in the middle of the defensive line.

The Huskers will be without defensive end Freedom Akinmoladun for the second week in a row. According to reports, he’s still a week or two away from getting back on the field.

Offensively, the Huskers lost tackle Nick Gates to a foot injury. He will be replaced by Zach Sterup in the starting lineup. However, Gates had the boot taken off, and he could be ready for the Northwestern game next week.

For the first time this season, the Huskers may have De’Mornay Pierson-El as the full-time punt return specialist. If Pierson-El is comfortable enough, he will be the guy. Coach Riley certainly hopes he’s ready for the challenge.
