Nebraska defense must take a stand

The Nebraska Cornhuskers are coming off of their second heartbreaking loss of the season. It wouldn’t be so bad if they weren’t only three games into the year, but the bounces have not gone their way at all. Now the Huskers enter their homecoming contest against the Southern Miss Golden Eagles with a (1-2) record.  As usual, we’re dropping knowledge on the five Nebraska players to watch. Hopefully, these performers have a chance to come through in the clutch on Saturday.

More from Husker Corner

It’s hard to know what to make of this Nebraska team. On one hand, they’ve been extremely exciting in all three contests. Part of the reason is due to their defensive performance.

First of all, they were part of the signature story in Week 1 of the college football season. Unfortunately, the BYU “Hail Mary” put the Huskers in a bind from the beginning. The 42-yard touchdown pass as time expired was only a glimpse of what Nebraska’s defense is going through now. So far, the Huskers have given up 14 receptions over 20 yards this season. Therefore, multiple players in the secondary must step up.

Offensively, Nebraska has adapted well to their new offense, but there have been too many lulls. Tommy Armstrong struggled, throwing three interceptions in the loss to Miami, but he also threw four touchdown passes in the same game. For the Huskers, it’s been feast or famine in Mike Riley‘s system. On Saturday, they need to feast on the Southern Miss defense.
