Husker Round Table: Spring Game Expectations

facebooktwitterreddit

The Husker Spring football game is right around the corner and the excitement level is very high. It is so high in fact that we are expecting around 70,000 fans in Memorial Stadium. This is mostly because we have started a new chapter in Husker football with a new coaching staff and a new playbook.

As a  Husker fan, what is that you expect to see from this game? We decided to have a Husker Round Table and came up with 4 questions for all of us to answer. We want your participation too so please let us know your answers in the comment section below or on the message boards where this article is posted.

Question 1: What position battle intrigues you the most and why? Which player wins that battle?

Kelli Anne: QB-New System-Pelini played favorites. Riley offers chance for everyone. Selfishly I want Johnny Stanton to win QB job, but will be happy as long as best person wins it.

Aaron McGlohn: WR-I want to see if Glenn Irons and Jamal Turner show enough to be a starter opposite of Pierson-El.  Westerkamp will win that spot.

Andrew Bienka: QB-With Armstrong missing a few days of practice I am looking forward in seeing how Bush, Fyfe, and Stanton look.  My money is on Armstrong to finish camp as top guy, with Bush then Fyfe next.

More from Husker Corner

Rosalie Suggs: The Kicking Corps.  Has Drew Brown matured? Has Mauro Bondi fully recovered? Will Sam Foltz have to do more than just punt this season?

Hunter Cave: RB-Ameer Abdullah will be hard to replace. I expect a two-pronged attack with bruiser Imani Cross and lightening quick Terrell Newby.

Brent Craig: RB, Ameer Abdullah is gone and no one has stepped up into the leading role.  I want to see how all the RB’s do because if one doesn’t step up then we will have to rely on our QB with only a 53% completion percentage, this scares me. Adam Taylor will lead the pack.

Question 2: What Player has solidified his starting role that, barring injury, he is there to stay?

Oct 4, 2014; East Lansing, MI, USA; Nebraska Cornhuskers wide receiver De

Kelli Anne: WR-De’Mornay Pierson-E.-It explains itself.  And yes, I am completely biased!

Aaron: Maliek Collins, he will be named 1st Team All-American!

Andrew: 2 of them-Vincent Valentine & Maliek Collins-Men among boys! See what DE Joe Keels said.

Rosalie: OT Zack Sterup!

Hunter: DPE-All Husker fans now know who he is and with a coach who loves small, quick receivers, DPE will trade a sophomore slump for an offensive explosion.

Brent: With Kenny Bell gone and the excitement of DPE, I still think that Westerkamp is our best threat as a WR. That guy can catch anything!

Question 3: Which unit will shine in the Spring Game; will it be the Offense, the Defense, or an equal balance?

Kelli Anne: You never show too much in the Spring and they limit blitzing so it is always about the offense, but I’m going with the Blackshirts!

Aaron: Defense will Shine, the learning curve is greater for the offense.

Andrew: Offense has play-makers but best unit on field will be the Defense! D-line will dominate and secondary will give the QB’s fits.

Rosalie: Defense will Shine!

Hunter: The Defense, full of  athleticism and now  a simpler scheme with two jobs, fill the gap and get to the ball. Expect a huge year for the D.

Brent: Right now the Defense is the best unit and may need them to carry the offense for awhile.

Question 4: What is the most important question that you want answered coming away from the Spring game that will make you feel the most comfortable going into fall camp?

Kelli Anne: What type of offense will the Huskers be running? Do players match the scheme?

Aaron: Who will be the front runner for starting I-back? A clear favorite needs to be established.

Andrew: Can the offensive line learn enough from Langsdorf’s scheme to get a leg up going into fall?

Rosalie: Has Tommy learned how to complete the short pass?

Hunter: Who will be the QB? Easy to say it will be Tommy, but he needs to dominate this spring to draw such a conclusion.  Bush is the talk of town, and there are others in the talent pool including the mythical Johnny Stanton.

Brent: My guess is Tommy will be the starting QB, so can Langsdorf teach Tommy to be a better passer and increase his completion percentage over 60%? To run this offense, it will need to be.

Now it is your turn Husker Fans!  We want to know what you think!  Tell us who you agree with or your thoughts. See you at the game and Go Big Red!
