Ohio State Buckeye softball team avoided a sweep on Sunday afternoon as they defeated the Nebraska softball team 5 – 4 at Buckeye Field. Nebraska has seen many last minute comeback victories this season but they couldn’t earn the victory Sunday afternoon.

Emily Lockman earned the start in the circle for the Huskers. She gave up five runs (all earned) on eight hits with one strike out. A run in third, a run in the fifth plus three runs in the sixth aided by two controversial umpire calls combined to give the Buckeyes a 5 – 0 lead over the Huskers at the end of six innings. Lockman (11-10) did not finish the game. Cassie McClure came on in relief, giving up one hit but ending the Ohio St. offensive onslaught.

Huskers were held scoreless for six innings by Buckeye senior pitcher Olivia O’Reilly. The offense struggled to get organized as they were plagued by pop ups, ground outs and strike outs.

The Cornhuskers last chance to pull out a victory came in the top of the seventh inning. Kat Woolman doubled, Laura Barrow singled to left and Kiki Stokes walked to load the bags for MJ Knighten. With one out, Knighten blasted a homer to center clearing the bases and cutting the Husker deficit down to one run.

Unfortunately, Nebraska fell short when both Steph Pasquale and Kylee Muir grounded out to end the game.

It was a disappointed loss for the Big Red but they won the series against the Buckeyes by sweeping the doubleheader on Saturday. Nebraska falls to 20-17 on the season and 8-3 in Big Ten Conference play. Huskers return home to host the Drake Bulldogs in a Tuesday doubleheader at Bowlin Stadium beginning at 5 p.m.(CDT).
