Nebraska Cornhusker Recruiting 2015: Down to the Wire

The 2015 Husker recruiting class is currently sitting at 19 commits according to Head Coach Mike Riley. With National Recruit Signing Day right around the corner, Mike Riley has reached his goal. This coaching staff has been very busy recruiting and it appears Husker fans across the nation are impressed.

Coach Riley certainly didn’t have much time left to recruit after coming to Nebraska which meant he had a tough job in front of him. He immediately contacted the 4 early enrollee commits to establish a relationship with them, and then began to not only contact the rest of the commits, but he also reached out nationally hitting up other potential prospects. On top of all that, he was also hiring his new coaching staff. Busy guy!

Once the dead period ended in the middle of January, Coach Riley and his staff scoured the country looking for recruits to fill the Huskers’ other needs and on Saturday, January 24th, he established his first “Meet and Greet” with 13 recruits and current commitments of the 2015 class.

As a result of this “Meet and Greet,” Coach Riley confirmed commits of three star defensive end DaiShon Neal, and solidified twin defensive tackles Carlos and Khali Davis, and persuaded 2 other recruits previously committed to other teams to switch to Nebraska (3 star linebacker Mohamed Berry and 2 star Safety Willie Sykes). The “Meet and Greet” weekend was a huge success.

After the dead period ended, Coach Riley and his staff traveled to several states to work their magic, Texas, Georgia, and Florida to name a few. There is no doubt that the coaches were earning their money and painting the nation red. The Husker head coach also announced that he and his coaching staff will be holding a few out of state football camps this summer which should start turning the heads of the 2016 recruits, their coaches, and their families.

At the time it was announced that Huskers would be taking as many as 19 commits for the 2015 recruiting class, the Huskers only had 15 commits. Since that announcement, Willie Sykes (Jan. 27) and on February 1, the Husker picked up 3 more commitments (2 previously committed to other schools) . Two star defensive end Alex Davis changed his commitment from Georgia Southern, and two star safety Antonio Reed changed his commitment from Memphis and three star wide receiver Lavan Alston was the third commit of the day. With the addition of Davis, that means we will have essentially a  Davis D-Line when all 3 are playing. I wonder if DaiShon Neal will change his name to Davis so we can have four? Either way, the Cowbell has been ringing today!

The magic number of 19 has been met, but there are at least three more prospects out there who are deciding between the Huskers and other schools. The question is, will Mike Riley accept any of their commitments since we now have 19? With 19 commits the Huskers are 3 over the 85-scholarship max. I guess they expect some attrition to occur (it usually does). There are at least 3 more kids deciding where to play football and  what if they all three want to play for the Huskers? What a great problem to have!

**UPDATE 2/2 Huskers picked up 20th commit in 2 star center from Las Vegas, Jordan Ober.
