Husker recruit watch – All-American Bowl

The All-American Bowl for high school players is Sunday at 8pm CDT on Fox Sports 1. The future Huskers to watch are Eric Lee Jr. and hopefully Sheriron Jones. Other targets with offers for the Cornhuskers are LB Jordan Fox, CBs Holton Hill and Frank Bunncom IV, DE Tyrone Wheatley and WR Kirk Merritt.

Eric Lee Jr. became a formal commit on February 1 of this year. He was recruited by Coach Warren. Believe it or not OSU also was interested in this cornerback from Littleton, CO. His official visit came during the Miami game. I think it’s safe to say he experienced what it’s like on Saturdays in Lincoln as that crowd was 91,585 strong. He will soon be on Lincoln campus full time as he’s enrolling for the spring semester.

Sheriron Jones is listed as a dual threat QB out of Moreno Valley, CA. He currently has offers from Florida, Nebraska and Tennessee. He is 190 lbs and an impressive 6′ 3″. He’s listed as a 4-star according to 247sports. The media buzz from his workouts at the All-American bowl said he was good on the short, intermediate and long throws. He was really great in design roll out plays. (quoted from analysis of Blair Angulo)

Nebraska was the walking wounded at linebacker at the end of the year so having Jordan Fox and Holton Hill would certainly help. Courtney Love transferred out, Trevor Roach, Zaire Anderson, and Austin Williams all graduated. Banderas and Santos are the only 2 with meaningful experience. Michael Rose-Ivey will be healthy finally but there are never enough good LBs in my opinion.

Jordan Fox is listed as an outside linebacker from Jersey City, New Jersey. He currently holds 12 offers from different colleges including Nebraska.  He is listed at 228 lbs and 6′ 2″, and a 3-star recruit.  Other defensive prospects to watch are Cornerbacks Holton Hill and Frank Buncom. Holton Hill hails from Houston. (couldn’t resist but you’ll remember it!) He is listed at 175 lbs and 6’2″.  He has expressed interest in offers from Alabama, Baylor, FL St., LSU and Texas. Nebraska offered him on March 3, 2014. It doesn’t appear the Huskers are really on his radar yet. Perhaps Coach Bray can convince him there is no place like Nebraska.

More from Husker Corner

Frank Buncom IV lives in San Diego, CA and had the perfect opportunity to watch other Husker Cornerbacks during the bowl game. He has offers from Notre Dame, Stanford, Vanderbilt, Coloroado and California in addition to Nebraska. He is listed as a 4-star recruit and comes in at 190 lbs and 6′ 2″. Interestingly, he is another kid who had an offer from the Beavers.

Tyrone Wheatley Jr. plays the much sought after position of DE & TE according to  247 sports. Huskers are in BIG need now that Gregory is leaving for the NFL. Wheatley is beastly (yeah, I’m on a roll!) at 6′ 6″ and 245 lbs. He is from Buffalo, NY and has offers from Alabama, Oregon, FL St., UCLA & USC as well as Nebraska. Michigan has also visited him. It would be a shame to lose him to another B1G Ten school but it looks like he’s headed west. ESPN listed him as a standout in practice on Day 2.

Lavan Alston is a wide receiver from Ventura, California. He is 6′ 0″ and 170 lbs. H has offers from California, Oregon St. , Penn St., Georgia, Wash St. as well as other schools and Nebraska. Coach Trent Bray has been working on getting him into the Husker receiving corps to join forces with Westerkamp and Pierson-El. He was offered right after Christmas on 12/26/14. He is supposedly leaning toward Cal but let’s hope he realizes it’s more fun to play football where the seasons change.

Kirk Merritt is a wide receiver from Destrehan, Louisiana. Other schools that have offered him are Oregon, Texas A&M, Auburn, Alabama, Arkansas, Clemson, Tennesee, Ole Miss, Penn St, Fl St., Notre Dame, Texas Tech, TCU, Az St. and I could go on.  Huskers offered him in December of 2013. Unless someone really can convince him to play in the colder climate, I suspect he’s headed somewhere in the SEC.

of note: Richard Moore, LB from Texas had an offer from the Huskers but committed to Texas A&M on 1/2/2015.
