The Husker Volleyball team had another successful week. The Huskers went 2-0 last week to improve their Big Ten record to 12-4, and their overall record to 20-7, giving the Huskers 6 wins in a row. But playing volleyball wasn’t the only exciting thing going on with the team last week as the Huskers signed four high school players to the team on National Letter of Intent Signing Day. Four different states were represented by this 2015 recruiting class: Iowa, Kentucky, Texas, and Nebraska.

In his excitement for this outstanding recruiting class, Head Volleyball Coach John Cook said, “They provide depth at all positions and should expect to compete for significant playing time.” Probably the most prominent member of the 2015 recruiting class was 6’3” MB/OH Mikaela Foecke, from Fort Madison, IA. Foecke is ranked the number two high school volleyball player in the country. Foecke is a 2014 Under Armour First-Team All-American and a 2013 MaxPreps Junior Volleyball Player of the Year. Foecke is hitting .635 for the season and has 369 career aces and 470 career blocks. Check out how HARD Foecke can hit the ball as she takes out the opponent & a spectator!

The Huskers picked up another nationally ranked player in 5’8” DS/L Kenzie Maloney of Louisville, KY. She is ranked the number 24 high school volleyball player in the country. Other honors she received were the 2014 Under Armour Second Team All-American and the Kentucky Seventh Region Player of the Year. Maloney, along with Mikaela Foeck, were starters for the US national team, taking silver in the 2013 World Championships.

The Huskers added another hitter to the team in 6’1” MB/OH Tiani Reeves of Gothenburg, NE. Reeves is a 2014 Under Armour Third-Team All-American. Finishing up the class was 5’10” Setter Brooke Smith of Weatherford, TX, who was a 2014 Junior Olympics qualifier.

After signing day, the Huskers took the court to play against Michigan State, beating the Spartans 3 games to 1 (20-25, 25-21, 25-22, 25-23). Kelsey Fien led the team with 17 kills, while Kadie Rolfzen had 15 or her own. The Huskers hit .196 while holding the Spartans to .147.

On Sunday the Huskers took on Maryland once again, and once again the Huskers were victorious. While not a sweep like last time, the Huskers won 3 games to 1 (25-17, 25-14, 18-25, 25-18). Kelsey Fien once again led the Huskers in kills with 18; Kadie Roflzen with 15 kills. As a team the Huskers hit .277 while holding the Tarrapins to .187.

Next up for the Huskers are the Hoosiers of Indiana as the Huskers travel to Bloomington, IN on 11/19 for a 6 pm CST start. The Hoosiers are 6-10 in the B1G and 15-13 overall. The Huskers then return back home to face the Wolverines of Michigan for a Saturday evening, November 22, game with a 7 pm CST start. The Wolverines are 7-9 in the B1G and 12-14 overall. Neither of the games are scheduled to be televised, but you can still listen to them on the Husker Radio Network affiliates. When asked about the team today in the press conference, John Cook stated, “We will have to take care of business and see where it shakes out”

More from Big Ten News

The Huskers remain number 11 in the country in the latest AVCA Volleyball Poll and the Huskers remain fourth in the Big Ten. With only four regular season games left, it appears the Huskers are out of it for the Big Ten Title, but National Championship hopes are still alive.
