The question about who will represent Husker football by wearing the letter “C” on their left shoulder was answered on Monday. For the second year in a row, Bo Pelini has named permanent captains, although this year, five will hold the title.
Picked by the team to be the heart and soul of the squad are running back Ameer Abdullah, wide receiver Kenny Bell, offensive guard Jake Cotton, cornerback Josh Mitchell and safety Corey Cooper.
In what could be considered a strange omission, All-Everything defensive end Randy Gregory is absent from the list.
However, the quintet named shares a common bond: they’re all seniors. The same applied to last year’s captains, quarterback Taylor Martinez, wide receiver Quincy Enunwa, offensive lineman Spencer Long and defensive back Ciante Evans.
What about Gregory? He doesn’t need a new patch on his shoulder to be a captain.
The likely early departure and potential Top 10 draft pick has the swagger of a captain, and and thus far, he’s lived up to all of the hype.
If No. 4 feels slighted at all, he can simply use that emotion as more motivation to crush opposing quarterbacks.
