With Will Bolt on his way to College Station, it appears his vacancy has been filled. According to CollegeBaseballDaily.com, former Cal-State Fullerton assistant Mike Kirby will be joining Darin Erstad’s Nebraska baseball crew.
An assistant with the Titans from 1991-1999, Kirby would see teams that won six Big West Conference titles, appeared in the College World Series four times (1992, 1994, 1995, 1999) and a won a national championship in 1995.
The addition of Kirby would give Nebraska its second Cal-State Fullerton alum as pitching coach Ted Silva is also a former Titan.
While at CSF, Kirby was responsible for first base and infielder coaching duties.
He also served as recruiting coordinator, pulling in a No. 23 overall class in 2012 according to Baseball America.
Prospects from that class produced National Freshman Pitcher of the Year Thomas Eshelman, Big West Conference Pitcher of the Year Justin Garza and 2013 everyday second baseman Jake Jefferies.
According to FullertonTitans.com:
…during the last two years has coached one Big West Conference Player of the Year (Carlos Lopez, 2013), one Big West Defensive Player of the Year (Richy Pedroza, 2013), one Big West Freshman Player of the Year (Matt Chapman, 2012) and four Major League Baseball draftees.
Looks like those contacts from Darin Erstad’s playing days with the Anaheim Angels are paying dividends.
