How nice is it for the Husker football program to get so much preseason recognition for a player on each side of the ball? Yes, that’s right. Ameer Abdullah and Randy Gregory received even more props.
Athlon Sports named Gregory No. 14 and Abdullah No. 20.
The junior defensive’ ends 9.5 sacks were noted as were the senior running back’s astounding statistic of topping the 100-yard mark on 11 occasions out of 13 games.
Other Big Ten players on the Top 50 list include:
No. 8 – Melvin Gordon, running back, Wisconsin
No. 12 – Brandon Scherff, offensive tackle, Iowa
No. 15 – Shilique Calhoun, defensive end, Michigan State
No. 16 – Christian Hackenberg, quarterback, Penn State
No. 36 – Stefon Diggs, wide receiver, Maryland
Michigan State quarterback Connor Cook was also nominated, but didn’t make the actual list.
After a slew of award nominations and preseason hype, is it possible for Gregory and Abdullah to live up to it at this point?
Quite possibly. The two faced similar expectations last year as a sophomore and junior, respectively.
Their play shows that they’re not exactly concerned that the bar’s been raised, but rather that they’re looking to push it up as high as it’ll go.
