Husker Football Rumors: Safety Drake Martinez To Transfer

The hits just keep on coming for Husker football. During a week that saw several members of the administration go, a player looks to join their ranks.

Sources have indicated that redshirt freshman Drake Martinez is looking to transfer out of Lincoln.

A member of Nebraska’s 2013 class, Martinez also had offers from Michigan State, San Diego State and Vanderbilt.

Considering that he’s a Laguna Beach, CA native, joining the Aztecs puts him only an hour and 15 minutes from home. This makes San Diego State a likely frontrunner for his services.

Should Martinez leave, Nebraska will have only two upperclassman safeties after the 2014 season in LeRoy Alexander and Nathan Gerry.

It wouldn’t surprise to see either D.J. Singleton or Luke Gifford grow into the role, but look for Charlton Warren to find someone to plug in.

More on this story as it develops.

Update:

Head coach Bo Pelini confirms Martinez’s departure.
