A gorgeous day, extra innings and a romantic ending for NU baseball (37-18, 18-6 Big Ten). Pat Kelly belted a three-run homer out of the park in the bottom of the tenth inning besting the Illinois Fighting Illini (31-19, 17-7 Big Ten) on Senior Day.
With the Series for Second Place concluded and the No. 2 seed in the Big Ten tournament locked up, the Big Red can rest…for now.
The fireworks started early as Illinois got three lead off extra base hits through five innings. However, the Nebraska defense held the Illini to three runs through as many frames. Nebraska was down 4-2 in the bottom of the sixth when Kelly advanced to second base on a wild pitch before Austin Darby was walked.
Tanner Lubach singled bringing Kelly around for a score and advancing Darby to third. Thanks to what was ruled a balk, Darby walked in tying the game at four runs for both clubs.
The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the tenth when the largest home crowd since the 2008 Nebraska home regional (6,354 fans) watched Kelly’s blast sail away.
NU baseball will next play at 1 p.m. next Wednesday at Omaha’s TD Ameritrade Park.
