Sophomore Nebraska football player Josh Banderas, 19 and a member of the Huskers’ track team are facing felony theft charges due to allegedly stealing seven bicycles from campus.
Sgt. Douglas Petersen released a report stating that information was received regarding two individuals using bolt cutters to remove bikes from racks. The bikes were loaded into a truck at approximately 5 p.m. Monday.
Lincoln police later stopped the truck driven by Nebraska distance runner Lucas Keifer, 19. Both were charged with possession of burglary tools and theft by unlawful taking and were released on a $3,500 bond. The Nebraska athletic department has released a statement saying that coaches are reportedly aware of the incident, but no comments have been made at this time.
Both athletes were cooperative with officials, admitting the crime was “bone-headed”. They are scheduled to appear in court on June 17.
