The Sporting News’ Matt Hayes is likely to get a little less heat than Athlon Sports did for his ranking of Bo Pelini among his Big Ten coaching colleagues. While Athlon put Nebraska’s seventh-year head man at No. 9, Hayes put Pelini firmly at No. 6.
Hayes points out the amazement of Pelini’s ability to seemingly gain clout despite his annual four losses and dropping games that his teams have no business losing. Hayes ends his critique of Pelini with an old chestnut:
Rarely has a 58-24 record been so scrutinized.
It’s rather amazing, to be true. Many Husker fans point out Pelini’s winning percentage and leave the argument at that. However, Hayes himself points out the annual roller coaster and leaves out the…unpleasantness against superior teams.
Wisconsin’s Gary Andersen gets the No. 5 spot largely due to his work at Utah State. Penn State’s James Franklin, Northwestern’s Pat Fitzgerald, Michigan State’s Mark Dantonio and Ohio State’s Urban Meyer take their rightful spots for the time being.
