Nebraska basketball head coach Tim Miles was honored as the 2014 Jim Phelan Award winner at this year’s at the CollegeInsider.com Awards Banquet. That’s a fancy way of saying he was voted the best coach in the land. Want to take a guess how many previous Nebrasketball coaches have won the honor? Three guesses, first two don’t count.

“I am truly humbled and honored to receive this award,” Miles said following the festivities. “It was an honor to be a finalist with some of the great coaches around the country. Hopefully it is a sign that people around the country are taking notice of what we are doing at Nebraska.”

Miles was in fine company for the award. Other nominees included Creighton’s Greg McDermott, Michigan’s John Beilein, Florida’s Billy Donovan and Wichita State’s Gregg Marshall.

“It is really an award for our whole program,” Miles said. “Not only for our players and coaches, but all of the staff members who work behind the scenes every day to help us build Husker basketball.”

What’s next for the Doland, SD native? Likely a hefty extension as I spoke about with Mike Welch.
