Nebraska vs. Illinois Preview
Conference play has arrived. Today’s matchup pits the Nebraska Cornhuskers and Illinois Fighting Illini at Memorial Stadium in Lincoln, NE.
Nebraska Offense vs. Illinois Defense: For the second straight game the Cornhuskers will be without senior quarterback Taylor Martinez. Redshrit Freshman Tommy Armstrong Jr. will make his second career start. The Illinois defense has not been tested much this season. Thus far they have faced two tests in Cincinnati and Washington. They played well against the Bearcats, but gave up over 600 yards of offense to the Huskies.
Look for the Huskers to come out running the ball. The Huskers have the offensive line to force fatigue on the Illini defense. The weather will not be ideal for the passing game. The wind will be gusty and the temperature will be cool.
Illinois Offense vs. Nebraska Defense: Illinois is led offensively by senior quarterback Nathan Scheelhaase. Scheelhaase has been one of the most prolific passers this season in the country. Illinois focuses on the passing game offensively but they do have a timely rushing attack. Thus far the Huskers have struggled mightily against the run but they have had timely takeaways this season.
The Illini should make some tweaks to their game plan due to the weather. Look for them to run the ball more than usual and to go with a short passing game. Look for the Huskers to send pressure Scheelhaase’s way so they don’t get burned in the open field.
Special Teams Preview: With tough conditions like this field position could be a deciding factor. If the offenses are struggling perhaps a huge return could turn this game into a teams’ direction.
Overall Game Outlook:
Expect a close game as neither defense looks like world beaters. The weather could dictate a lot less scoring than most would anticipate.
Score Prediction: Huskers 34 Fighting Illini 24
