The Nebraska Cornhuskers and Illinois Fighting Illini open up their Big Ten Conference schedule Saturday morning in Lincoln. Both come into the game at 3-1 and are looking to start conference play with a win. Both teams suffered losses to the hands of PAC 12 opponents.
The teams have met ten times with the first game dating back to October 24, 1892. Nebraska walked out victorious with a 6-0 win. The Huskers won the next three meetings from 1903-1905 by scores of 18-0, 16-10, and 24-6 respectively.
The Illini recorded their only two victories in the series in 1923 and 1924 by scores of 24-7 and 9-6. In 1925 Nebraska got back to their wining ways and defeated Illinois 14-0. Almost twenty years would pass before the teams met again. On September 26, 1953 the teams battled to a 21-21 tie.
The final two meetings between the Nebraska Cornhuskers and Illinois Fighting Illini took place in the 1985-86 seasons. In the middle of the Tom Osborne era, the games were not nearly as close as all of the teams previous encounters. The Huskers bullied Illinois in 1985, running away with the game with a 52-25 win. The next season was equally brutal for the Illini, if not worse. Nebraska walked away with a 59-14 blowout victory.
Nebraska leads the overall series 7-2-1.
