Nebraska Cornhuskers vs Southern Miss Golden Eagles: Five Things to Watch For
1) Southern Miss Quarterback Allan Bridgford Will Target Nebraska’s Linebackers:
Bridgford threw the ball 53 times against Texas State last weekend for 377 yards and a touchdown. He also threw two interceptions in the loss. Look fpr Bridgford to test the linebackers on Saturday. Quick, short passes over the middle on crossing routes are likely. This team did not run the football in their season opener, so the pass happy Golden Eagles will pick on the weakest Husker defensive position group.
2) Offensive Coordinator Tim Beck Will Open Up The Playbook Some Yet Stay Conservative:
Beck admitted he got too conservative last Saturday against Wyoming. He was trying to compensate for Nebraska’s struggling defense. This week he will have to open things up a little bit more if the team wants to be successful. You will see a few more passes and maybe even a trick play, but the offense will still be run heavy.
3) The Husker Defensive Will Blitz, Blitz, Blitz:
If a team is one dimensional it’s a lot easier to prepare. Southern Miss lacks a strong running game, which means the line, backers, and defensive backs are going to bring the heat on The Golden Eagles offense. Allan Bridgford is not know for mobility, so he will be open on the quarterback from every direction.
4) Taylor Martinez Will Have Highlight Reel Plays:
Taylor didn’t play poorly in week one, he was held back by Tim Beck’s play calling. Taylor Martinez is going to expose the Southern Miss defense and break a run that will be on ESPN’s Top Plays. He’s due, and unfortunately for The Golden Eagles, they will pay for it.
5) There Will Still Be Confusion For Nebraska’s Defense:
Many of these guys are learning on the fly. I don’t expect them to play nearly as poorly as they did last week, but there will be mistakes and they are going to give up some points. It’s all about improving and making fewer each week.
