The Wyoming Cowboys come into Lincoln on Saturday looking to do what has not been done in decades, beat the Nebraska Cornhuskers in their home opener. This isn’t The Mountain West, so Wyoming will have to bring their A game. For The Cowboys to do the impossible, they have to follow a few keys to victory.
1) Try To Expose Nebraska’s Inexperience:
If Wyoming is going to win this game, they will have to do it in a shootout. Quarterback Brett Smith will need to have a wide open playbook to work with and The Cowboys will have to keep Nebraska’s defense off balance. Wyoming has to find a way to isolate the inexperienced linebackers and attack.
2) Force Turnovers:
The Cowboy’s defense was one of the worst in the nation last year and Nebraska is going to put up points. If Wyoming wants a chance to win they have to force the Huskers to turn the ball over. Making Taylor Martinez force the football into traffic and trying to knock the ball free from the backs have to be an emphasis for the Cowboys.
3) Play A Perfect Game:
Wyoming will need a mistake free effort to beat Nebraska. Penalties have to be limited and turnovers have to be completely absent. The Husker offense will target every weakness that the Cowboy’s defense has. A lack of playmakers will force Dave Christensen’s team to play the game of their lives. There will be no room for error, and a little luck might be needed as well.
