John Papuchis gave some indications of who some of the starters might be against Wyoming after practice yesterday. The second year defensive coordinator said that if the season started today Jason Ankrah, Thad Randle, Vincent Valentine, and either Randy Gregory or Avery Moss would be the starting front four.
He also mentioned that Corey Cooper, Harvey Jackson, and Andrew Green are still competing for the safety spot, but the starter would not be revealed for a few days. When it comes to the linebackers Papuchis would only say that David Santos will be starting at the Mike position, and said that the other starters would depend on what kind of formations the Huskers see from Wyoming on Saturday.
The starting lineup is going to be a formality for The Nebraska Cornhuskers in 2013. Coaches have already noted that there will be a heavy rotation on the defensive line, and it will probably be the same at linebacker. Each week will present a different offense that will create a need for certain personnel matchups. One week Nathan Gerry might get the nod, another week it could be Afalava. What matters now is who gives Nebraska the best chance of beating The Wyoming Cowboys. Their spread offense will dictate what players take the field for the Huskers defense.
This will be a test run for some the newcomers. As I have mentioned before, nothing can duplicate actual game reps. The starters on Saturday might not be the same once UCLA rolls into Memorial Stadium on September fourteenth.
