Preseason Top 25: Number 16 Notre Dame Fighting Irish

Preseason Top 25 Countdown:

25- Northwestern Wildcats

24- TCU Horned Frogs

23- Oregon State Beavers

22- UCLA Bruins

21- Nebraska Cornhuskers

20- Wisconsin Badgers

19- Texas Longhorns

18- Kansas State Wildcats

17- Boise State Broncos

16- Notre Dame Fighting Irish:

Coach: Brian Kelly

2012 Record: Overall 12-1

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish took a hit when quarterback Everett Golson was released from his scholarship a few weeks back. Senior Tommy Rees will now guide Notre Dame’s offense in 2013. While he does not have the same duel threat at the position, Rees does have the arm and wide receivers to throw to. Senior T.J. Jones will lead the receiving core with young threats like sophomore DeVaris Daniels and freshman C.J. Prosise also in the fold. The offensive line also returns three starters from 2012.

The Fighting Irish defense will be just as good as it was last season. While losing Manti Te’o is big, the squad does return 8 starters including cornerback Bennett Jackson who led the team with 65 tackles in 2012. The d line is also one of the best in the nation with junior Louis Nix III and junior Stephon Tuitt pressuring the opposing quarterback.

2013 Forecast: While a return to the BCS Championship is a long shot at best, Notre Dame will be a good team in 2013. If The Fighting Irish can survive the month of September (@Michigan, Michigan State, Oklahoma) they can make another push at a BCS Bowl, but the team will likely fall short. Expect a solid year from The Golden Domer’s, finishing the season with nine wins.
