Huskers fall to Golden Gophers

by Basketball

The game was so close.

Nebraska (11-11, 3-8 Big Ten) and Minnesota (17-7, 5-6) were battling neck and neck. The Huskers held a one-point halftime lead.

Then the Golden Gophers went on a run.

Two three-point plays and nine points later, Minnesota broke free of a tie and held a 48-39 lead with 7:22 remaining.

Nebraska would never recover.

The closest the Huskers would come is seven points. At the final buzzer, the final score read Minnesota – 69, Nebraska – 61.

The loss can mostly be attributed to poor shooting, after the Huskers shot 2 for 16 to open the second half.

Minnesota’s leading scorer came from their bench, as Chip Armelin led the Golden Gophers with 15 points. Only one other scorer, Julian Welch, scored ten or more points.

Bo Spencer led Nebraska with 18 points, while Toney McCray added 15. Brandon Richardson, who has had a strong month for the Huskers, led the Huskers with 8 points at half, but added only another 2 points in the second half to finish with 10.

The Huskers have lost three of their last four games and eight of their last 11. Their next opportunity for a win comes Wednesday, Feb. 8, when they take on No. 22 Michigan in Lincoln.
