Quarterback Armstrong as a Leader

by Big Ten Football

Nebraska’s lone quarterback commit, three-star dual threat Tommy Armstrong Jr., wants to bring leadership to Nebraska.

During Armstrong’s junior year at Steele High School in Cibolo, Texas, he was the only non-senior starting player, and was expected to be a leader from the position most known for leadership – quarterback.

“I can bring that leadership role,” Armstrong said. “I had a lot of leaders on my team, and I learned a lot from that.”

The 6’2”, 208 pound Armstrong said his experience leading older players in high school can translate to early success at Nebraska.

“That’s pretty much what a quarterback has to do is know his job and stay level headed,” Armstrong said. “They have to keep their head and pick everyone else up.

“Coming from a team full of seniors and I’m the only junior on the roster that was starting, I’m pretty used to it now.”

While Armstrong said he needs to improve his check downs and reads, he says he’s gotten pretty good at not forcing balls into bad spots.

His role as a dual threat quarterback can help him in a number of ways, especially in Nebraska’s offense.

“You have to take whatever the defense gives you,” Armstrong said. “Most of the time in college you have to pass first. Our offense is more of a rush first offense.”

Armstrong ran for 1,281 yards and 16 TDs this season, while passing for 1,945 yards and 29 TDs.

His season ended in the state championship game, a game Steele lost.

“My last year I learned how to win a championship and lose a championship,” Armstrong said.

One of Armstrong’s goals coming into Nebraska is to win a Big Ten Championship. After watching the Huskers play this season and speaking with players like running back Ameer Abdullah and coaches like offensive coordinator Tim Beck, Armstrong says Nebraska is capable of winning the Big Ten next season if they can learn from this season.

“Maturing the way that they did and learning from the mistakes that they had,” Armstrong said. “Just finish strong.”

Armstrong maintains a firm commitment to Nebraska and is unsure whether or not he will take another visit before signing day.
