Taylor Martinez or Cody Green?

That is the question…

The biggest question going into Saturday night’s Big 12 Championship between the Oklahoma Sooners and YOUR Nebrassssska Cornhuskkkkkkers! (Sorry, I had Michael Buffer send over some tips for my blog, dunno if I like it yet).

Let me start by saying how amazing it is to even be having this debate. That says a lot about the improvement of Cody Green in the past couple of weeks. He has come a long ways.

The simple truth, is that if Taylor Martinez is 100% healthy, then he is the guy. But who knows if he ever will be? He certainly won’t be by Saturday night. The knock on mobile QB’s is that they rarely stay healthy.

T-Mart has yet to put a good game together since first injuring his knee against Missouri. He hasn’t logged a touchdown, through the air or by way of foot. In fact, the offense was rather stagnant in his two starts against Kansas and Texas A&M.

Those two games were T-Mobile’s worst outputs of the season, aside from the Texas tragedy. The question must be asked: How effective can Martinez be if he’s not 100%?

Cody Green did an OK job filling in at QB against Iowa State, struggled in limited action against Texas A&M, but played the best game of his career against Colorado, where he threw for 2 touchdowns and even seemed competent as a runner.

So what was the difference between those three games?

The week of Iowa St. was filled with questions about who would start, but most people figured that Martinez was healthy enough to go late in the week. It was a game day surprise when Green got the nod. He did OK.

T-Mart injured his ankle against Texas A&M, which forced Green into the game off the bench. Green never found his rhythm and was later replaced by an equally ineffective, gimpy Martinez.

Bo Pelini announced early in the week that Cody Green would be the starter against Colorado. Green practiced all week in confidence that he would start come Saturday. This produced the best game of his career.

Pelini said a few days ago that he would consider playing both QB’s in the game on Saturday night. I would only suggest so if Green is named the starter and T-Mart comes in off the bench.

Green isn’t the type of QB that will provide a spark to a struggling offense. He needs to get into a rhythm to be effective. He reminds me a lot of Jason Campbell, former Auburn QB, and current Oakland Raider. He won’t “wow” you, but he can be solid.

However, Martinez could most definitely provide a spark to a sputtering offense with his big play potential. Suddenly, the defense has to take notice of him, which might even free other playmakers up in the process.

If I were making the decision, I would start Cody Green at QB come Saturday night, and have T-Mart ready  to go if the game resembles a shootout of any kind.

My biggest hope is that Pelini makes a decision in the next day or two. Nebraska has been at their best when they’ve been decisive. I don’t buy into the advantage of a defense having to prepare for two different QB’s. I think the disadvantage placed on your own offensive rhythm has a bigger impact then anything on the opposing team.

My biggest fear is that Pelini names Cody Green the starter, which pisses off the potentially mentally unstable Taylor Martinez. He is young, but there could’ve been something more to the rumors of him quitting then was ever reported.

What do you guys think? Who’s the man you’d go with on Saturday, I’d love to hear any and all opinions on this debate which could easily be argued either way.
