By now everybody knows that Nebraska is leaving the Big 12 after this year, leaving ten little teams behind. Nobody really knows what next year will be like for Huskers fans.
One precedent that I would like to set is the proper team to cheer for in their ex-conference, so HuskerCorner is calling for all of Big Red Nation to throw their support behind the Kansas Jayhawks for the coming years.
Turner Gill is an integral part of Nebraska Cornhuskers history. He led the greatest team to never win the National Championship, the 1983 Nebraska squad that went for 2 points and the win against Miami in the Orange Bowl.
Gill is off to a bit of a rough start with the Jayhawks, and could use all the support he can get (Kansas fans don’t really understand football ya see?).
This works out great for me because Kansas is my second favorite college program in the country (and favorite in College Basketball- shhh), which made things emotionally awkward for myself when the two played each other. No I have no qualms about rooting for anything and everything KU.
I understand not rooting for KU this year because Nebraska still occupies a spot in the fading conference or in the past because they faced each other every year. But, as of next year, Nebraska will move on to new opponents with all new rivalries forming.
And while some of you might think its sacrilegious to support a (soon-to-be-former) conference foe like KU, it isn’t like I’m asking you to root for Missouri or Colorado or even, gulp, Texas. It’s just the harmless lil’ Jayhawks!
They’re a fun little team in a cool little town that could use a helping hand.
So I will start the movement. After Saturday’s game, I know Tom Osborne is with me (going easy on them Hawks). Lets cheer on Turner Gill and the Kansas Jayhawks from this moment on. Who’s coming with me?
::Edit:: Oh, and for a great read, check out this article on my former neighbor in Lawrence, Olaitan Oguntodu, one of the greatest people I’ve ever met. You won’t be disappointed.
