Taylor Martinez for heisman?

I was half expecting Nebraska to make a statement last night, when thrust into the national spotlight, but was not expecting Taylor Martinez to be the talk of the nation today.

T-Mobile was unbelievable last night. The most rushing yards for a quarterback in Nebraska history (241). Eat your heart out Turner Gill, Scott Frost, Eric Crouch, Tommie Frazier, and the man who’s record he actually broke, Jammal Lord (Thank you for removing him from the record books). Martinez (T-)murdered them all.

The Wildcat safeties were the players I had my eyes on in the midst of his series of long runs (35, 54, 80, and 41). Greatly underestimating his speed all game, they would crash down too hard on his runs only to see him (T-)fly by to the delight of the 25% red-clad faithful inside the stadium.

Oh yeah, he’s a freshman by the way.

Instead of the “good luck in the Big 10″ sarcasm heard from Wildcats fans last night, they should have been offering “thank you’s” for sparing them three more years of T-Misery.

My only worry now centers around one word. heisman. Yes, in lowercase. I lost most all respect for the trophy when the unanimously considered “best player” was denied the trophy last year. Ndefensible.

T-Mart is still only a freshman. And despite the rapid shift towards youth in today’s College Football, it’s a lot to ask of a player five games into a career. I can only assume he watches Sportscenter just like me, with talk centered around him and his entrance into the heisman race. This has me a bit worried.

As a fan, I would prefer to stay out of the spotlight for as long as possible. Nebraska needed to impress a national audience for a shot at lofty goals later on this season, but now the hard part begins: Keeping players heads from swelling, a task which rests squarely on Bo Pelini’s shoulders.

Keep the focus on the task at hand, which has nothing to do with the heisman trophy. A National Championship is what we want, and all other distractions are just that. Distractions. So you can have your heisman Nard Dogg (Denard Robinson), the Huskers have their eyes on something Bigger.
